As an antifreeze additive, sodium formate is used for the buildin of monolithic concrete and reinforced concrete structures, as well as for the production of prefabricated concrete and reinforced concrete structures at polygons with a steady average daily outdoor temperature below 5 degrees. Concrete with this additive is prohibited to be used in prestressed structures intended for operation in water and gas environments with relative humidity of more than 60% with the presence of inclusions of reactive silica in the aggregate, in reinforced concrete structures for electrified transport and industrial enterprises using a constant electric current.

Dosage Sodium formate is introduced into the concrete mixture in an amount of: - 1.5% of the mass of cement in terms of dry sodium formate at a design hardening temperature of up to -5 ° C; - 2.5% of the mass of cement in terms of dry sodium formate at a design hardening temperature of up to -10 ° C; - 3.5% of the mass of cement when calculated for dry sodium formate at a design hardening temperature of up to -15 ° C. When preparing concrete (mortar), the additive must be dissolved in warm water. The resulting solution is added together with water.

Safety requirements

Hazard Class

 3

Basic properties and types of danger

Basic properties

Crystalline powder, highly soluble in water, slightly soluble in alcohols, insoluble in esters.

Explosion  and fire hazard

Explosion-proof and non-flammable, however, in places of storage and work with sodium formate, smoking and the use of open fire should be prohibited.

Danger to humans

Sodium formate causes irritation in the upper respiratory tract and mucous membranes.

Personal protective equipment

While working with sodium formate it should be used personal protective equipment - gown, rubber respirator gloves. In emergency situations it is necessary to use gas mask A or M.

Technical Sodium formiate is explosive and non-combustible, however, in places of storage and work with it, smoking and the use of open fire should be prohibited, as regards the degree of exposure to the body, it refers to substances of the 3rd class of danger. When working with sodium formate, individual protective equipment should be used - a bathrobe, a rubber glove respirator. In emergency situations, a gas mask A or M should be used.
